I saw a few people grumbling on Twitter a bit about the new authoritative and objective Pitchfork Top 50 Ambient Albums OF ALL TIME FOREVER AND EVER NON-NEGOTIABLE listicle. Tangentially there was griping about how publications never bother to cover or take seriously any netlabel music. This is a response to the hubbub. Let's write our own recommendations of ambient music & include artists that don't get included elsewhere. - Pick one to three of your top, favorite, free-to-download ambient albums. Ambient can be defined as broadly or narrowly as you find appropriate, just pick some albums that you really love. - They can be self released albums or netlabel released albums, but they have to be free to download for anyone (i.e. not like a download code that you got but others can't have). It can be pay-what-you-want. * - Don't list your own releases, how dumb would that be? - Try to pick artists that aren't well known, don't link to the fucking free Nine Inch Nails record that you think of as ambient. The point is to bring some attention to artists that are doing good work, but not getting as much recognition as they ought to. - Don't rank them, this isn't gonna be a "best-of" listicle, it's just you recommending some really cool music to other people who might dig it. - Anyone can submit something, but I'm not under any obligation to publish everything I get. - Send me a link to where each album can be downloaded for free, and a link to where an image of the cover art can be found - Write something briefly describing the music and saying why you like it. This doesn't have to be some sort of amazing essay, you can just write a sentence or two. You can also do something slightly longer, but keep it about the music. No one wants to hear the details of your divorce when reading about music. You don't have to be a brilliant writer, just describe the music and write about why / how you like it. - Tell me your name the way you want it to be credited on the blog page, and if you want to give me a link to whatever you do that's fine too, I'll include it. Send it all here: c.reider@vuzhmusic.com Put this in the subject line: MY FAVE AMBIENT NETLABEL MUSIC Deadline… uh, two weeks oughta be plenty of time to turn something in, right? so October 11. * Perhaps you are wondering why this provision? Music shared for free happens to be a longtime passion of mine in particular - if you prefer to write about music that's not free, nothing's stopping you!
