Ever pulling into the abyss... Artist Statement: This recording was created out of incidental music and sounds created for the 2011 Utah Valley University production of Sarah Ruhl's "Eurydice". The play is retelling of the Orpheus myth from the point of view of Eurydice. The piece attempts to roughly parallel the play's 3-movement plot structure, moving from our world, to the underworld, and finally to the tragic meeting of the two. "gravity is very compelling" incorporates motifs from the drama, particularly water, string, and the timeless sense of eternal "now." Bio: Encomiast began recording in 1999 as the brainchild of Ross Hagen and has released more than a dozen recordings on a number of different labels including Crucial Bliss, Lens Records, Mystery Sea, and Taalem. The lineup of encomiast has changed a lot over the years, but Neville Harson, Megan Garland, and Nick Paul have been critical members. The sound sources and compositional processes have likewise evolved and changed, depending on the needs of individual projects. Encomiast occasionally performs live as well. The following review by Baxter Tocher at Ear Tickles:I have to confess that I hadn't heard of Encomiast before. The collective's membership varies; they have released over a dozen albums, and have also been involved in film music and occasional live performances. "Gravity Is Very Compelling" was created out of incidental music and sounds created for a production of Sarah Ruhl's play "Eurydice". It's a single piece of music, just over half-an-hour long, which the artist states "attempts to roughly parallel the play's 3-movement plot structure, moving from our world, to the underworld, and finally to the tragic meeting of [Orpheus and Eurydice]". |
