These are tracks constructed using an autonomous system to create random compositions. Miquel Parera worked on the software for MUME weekend (http://www.metacreation.net/mumewe2013/). Among the things that have long interested me as an artist, and also as the manager of this netlabel, is how personal artistic style emerges. If the artist disengages from conscious activity during the creative act, how does the work still represent the artist? What is style? Does style occur in the subconscious? Where and how and when does style intertwine itself with action? In the case of Miquel Parera, and others working in this field, the use of automatic, random and algorithmic composition to remove recognizable stamp of the human composer still does not fully remove personality from the finished work, this collection of music is a fine example. This work sounds like Miquel Parera's music, even as he attempts to remove his ego from the work. Artist Statement: Despite being random, I consider it representative of my way to see the work with sound, because everything I program is aimed at automation and randomness. Contrary to what we had expected, stylistic coherence has emerged (or so I think). When I try to reach the ultimate motivation to make noise, I realize that this is a sort of challenge: to what extent I am able to eliminate me myself. It may seem simple, but it is very difficult, is a work that began with Cage (well, actually this idea came from before) and I think nobody has done it. I can not even imagine how! |
